First PostWelcome to the Blog of Finely Tuned Voice! My name is Maria Palombo and I am the primary voice instructor at Finely Tuned Voice Lessons. In this space, we will discuss the voice and how it works, offer vocal tips, review local shows, and post performance videos for your enjoyment.
Today, we would like to start by debunking some common voice lesson myths! What is a private voice lesson and what does it accomplish? A private voice lesson is a one-on-one singing lesson with a highly qualified instructor. During a voice lesson, the singer will learn many techniques that will improve breath control, resonance, and interpretation of songs. This training will provide the singer with the confidence to perform publicly, increase their range, or help them sing a song they have always wanted to sing. You can start voice lessons at any age. You can....but the voice tends to be more settled after puberty. Remember your own years of voice changes? :) Further, once you reach a certain age of adulthood, you may notice your voice does not operate like it used to in your youth. We love teaching senior citizens and helping them regain some of the flexibility and strength their voices used to have. You must sing from your diaphragm. This is a narrow view of a much larger concept. The main organ you use for singing (therefore breathing) is the lungs! The diaphragm is involved, but only in that it descends when you inhale, expanding your belly. Your middle section expands when you inhale mostly because your lungs fill up with air! You must sing from your lungs. Drinking water will hydrate my vocal folds. This is true-however, drinking water hydrates your vocal folds because it hydrates your body. When you swallow, your epiglottis covers your airway so you do not choke on your water. This means that the vocal folds (which are housed in your airway) never actually become wet from your intake of water. The only way to get moisture directly to your vocal folds is to inhale steam (from the shower, a humidifier, or vaporizer). With that being said, we do recommend that you bring a bottle of water with you to your lesson. It will serve as a helpful reminder for you to keep your body hydrated. When you begin your vocal journey with us, you will be well on your way to learning how your own voice works. We are excited to help you accomplish your vocal goals and ensure your voice is functioning well. Check out our Voice Lessons page to learn more about what we can do for you!
